Makhunga's work is mixed media collage in the form of the figurative, abstract, and expressionist movements. He shows appreciation for the things he values most in his environment, expressing and reflecting his roots, which he recognises as playing a significant role in his journey. His work portrays figures and portraits of celebration, Ubuntu, and the Nguni culture.
Sibusiso Makhunga was born in 1992, and raised in Richards Bay, in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. A self-taught artist, he benefited from the mentoring of established Congolese artist, Thonton Kabeya. Makhunga's work is influenced by a passion for the textures and bold colours of fashion, which empowers the expression of humankind's inner beauty.
As his introduction to the South African market, Makhunga sold out his first group show with One Art Gallery at the RMB Turbine Art Fair in 2019. In November of that year, Makhunga also exhibited his untitled portraits at Bag Factory's Summer Salon. In 2020, his works were included in the Workers' Museum collection of 2021.
Makhunga participated in the Ballito Creative Contagious Group Exhibition with his series The Innocence of a Childhood's Happiness, which was also the subject of his most recent solo exhibition at the Alliance Français in Durban, which took place in November.
