Louise Almon
Botanical Still Life
2024
Almon's technique of multi-layered monotypes is a fascinating exploration of botanical still life. This method involves applying oil-based ink onto a large glass surface and gradually lifting off the color layer by layer, with each layer allowed to dry before the next one is applied. Once multiple layers of color have been built up, black ink is rolled onto the glass, and then paper is carefully placed face down onto the ink. At this stage, Almon draws the conceptualized image onto the back of the paper. When the paper is lifted off, the image emerges in reverse, resulting in works that are entirely unique and impossible to reproduce. This process not only showcases Almon's skill but also adds a layer of complexity and intrigue to her botanical still life compositions.
